PROJECTS

On December 1, 2011, the U.S. research community successfully finished its effort to collect a deep ice core from central West Antarctic for studies of climate, ice sheet history, and cryobiology. The 12.2-centimeter (4.8-inch) diameter cylinders of ice that make up the 3405 meter-long ice core contain uniquely detailed information on past environmental conditions during the last 68,000 years. Approximately 40 separate but synergistic projects are funded by the National Science Foundation to analyze the ice and interpret its records.
